Before wiring your recording studio,

you need to make an informed decision on what type of cable you would like to hear. All cable, shielded twisted pair, has three basic properties: resistance, capacitance, and inductance. The capacitance and inductance ultimately makes all cable act like a passive filter. The less capacitance a cable has, the wider the bandwidth, which means you will hear more high end and more harmonics. It is easiest to hear the difference at mic level.

There is the choice of multipair or single pair cables. Most install multipair cable when wiring their studio. Mogami analog multipair cable, the most popular in recording studios, is one of the easiest to prep. Gepco "Blue" has lower capacitance than most analog cables; it is not as pliable as Mogami. Belden 1800 series digital multipair cable is made within tight specs. We were told +/-5%, but they advertise +/-7%. The Standard for AES/EBU digital cable calls for specifications within 110 ohm +/- 20%. Canare quad is a lot of labor. Then there are the specialty cables and the audiophile cables. We recommend single pair digital "microphone cable", if it is within your budget.
